The start of a new year marks the arrival of new and out with the old. With the unprecedented global pandemic that the world saw, a lot of functions and social trends saw game-changing updates and interventions. Architecture saw similar design interventions, be it in the interior or the exterior of the building. Many design interventions were seen as important, for consideration for a more adaptable living system.

There is now a higher focus on emerging technological inclusions, long-lasting architectural elements, and environmentally conscious consumers.
Joy and Squiggles

After not much to celebrate in 2020, there are some design introductions in 2021 which allows one to celebrate life and portray happiness and joy through colors, patterns, and organic forms. The incorporation of lively colors with eye-catching patterns and texture combos will be heavily used in spaces. Keeping up with energetic tones, one can get ready to see some organic shapes used everywhere, from carpets to mirrors to cups. It has been identified that human connection to their surroundings can get enhanced with the use of subtle nature-inspired shapes and forms.

Sustainability and Green

An eye-opening 2020 has made everyone realize just how important natural surroundings are to us. Designers everywhere are now making use of more outdoor-indoor connectivity to keep humans closer to nature rather than buildings concrete jungles all around. Along with consumers being sensitive to more organic, brand rooted products, even buildings are being looked at for being environmentally friendly. New buildings are now adapting an active use of green facades, looking for both vertical and horizontal planter. With the importance of the outdoors and balconies suddenly coming into the picture, a lot of houses are opting for spaces that act as outdoor balconies to homes and serve greenery closer inside. Architects are more conscious of using naturally sourced and recycled material for decoration and construction. The aim is to make sustainability a requirement rather than a trend and to make a reliable and convenient layout of plans that allow easy access to the outdoors.

Personal Interior style
With being inside homes for a year, people are looking at diverting spaces that showcase more of their personality. After almost a year of limited social interactions, there are interior reflections inside a home that communicated who the residing owner is. The rooms or spaces that one does video calls can be the perfect area to personalize your space and regale who one is. This could depend on personal choices of wall colors, to table showpieces to the curtains one wants to use of certain pattern or colors, designers are now vouching for more personal feedback from the individual using the areas.

Multifunctional Spaces

The pandemic and following lockdown has made one realize how their homes are not fit for all day-to-day activities for all members of the family to be done at home. Countless homes found people working from home and students studying from home which made the spaces inside feel too crowded with less suitable setups for the assigned activities. People are now looking at making designated spaces for their daily work. There is a high push for open plan houses that combine the family seating and dining to make wider room for entertaining.
Kitchens have suddenly come to focus with lockdown cooking experiments and people are looking at bigger and colorful kitchens with ample storage and counter spaces. With remote work going mainstream there is a growing preference for distinct sound-proof office spaces with storage areas in the room and customized chairs and tables for all-day comfort. Being cooped up inside four walls all day has also got brought out the importance of balconies and terraces, either for a change of scene or a much-needed breath of fresh air. 2021 will see homes with separate rooms for entertaining, workout, office, studying, and outdoors, and leisure.

Minimal Industrial style

Trends will now shift towards creating more open, flexible spaces that allow substantial natural light and accentuate the room height and depth. Homes will now incorporate more sharp lines and shapes and call for perfect symmetry in the space. There is now a high recognition of the pliancy of external architectural features such as balconies, terraces, lounge areas, patios, and garages. Naturally raw facades have come to be highlighted with materials like brick, concrete, glass, metal, wood, and stone. Such walls are not refurbished anymore but continued in rooms to act as accent walls that add a decorative element to space. Floor to ceiling windows without grills allow for expansive panoramic views without demanding much maintenance. The use of glass partitions or metallic lattice partition inside the home allows hints of privacy while giving an outlook of an open flexible floor plan. One can see the inclusion of light neutral colors incorporated in the interiors which range from white, beige, grey, neutral brows, and natural greens along with any pop of brought color to act as an accent to the room.

One can now see the inclusion of architecture with nature and not isolated in concrete. Architecture and interiors will now see to achieve the perfect harmony of comfort with the nature around us and bring forth personal ease as a priority reflected in the design.
